Recently, stories like this have been frequently shared across developer communities. What exactly went wrong?
Why It Matters
Many developers expect that by paying a monthly subscription fee for Claude Pro or Max, they should be able to freely use their account credentials in external coding tools. However, Anthropic strictly restricts this. Failing to understand these restrictions and continuing to use third-party tools out of habit can lead to your hard-earned account being suspended in an instant. To put it simply, a Claude subscription account is like a ‘VIP cinema membership.’ This membership allows you to watch movies yourself, but if you were to copy the QR code of your membership and share it with friends to let them watch for free, that is exactly what ‘unauthorized subscription token usage’ is.
Technically speaking, Anthropic policy forbids using the ‘OAuth token’ (a digital key containing user authentication info) issued when a user logs in via the web, inside third-party software (such as OpenClaw, etc.). Where We Stand
As of April 4, 2026, Anthropic has completely blocked the ability for subscription-based service tokens to be used in external tools like OpenClaw Anthropic updated their usage policy to block Claude Code subscriptions from running OpenClaw automations. Violating this policy can result in automatic access denial by the system, or further account suspension measures.
For those whose accounts are already suspended, many users are proceeding with appeals through an official Google Form provided by Anthropic. In fact, some users have had their accounts reinstated after politely explaining their inadvertent usage habits I appealed mine a few days ago after falling under suspension. However, since it can take a long time to receive a response, prevention is more important than anything else As a hobbyist embedded coder, I used a Claude Pro subscription to help with unfamiliar programming tasks.

While it might feel cumbersome for now, developing the habit of using official, API-based routes is the best way to keep your development work stable without the risk of account suspension.
