Meta has challenged the AI coding tool market with the launch of 'MuseCode,' a terminal-based AI agent optimized for large-scale code tasks.
Imagine this: you’re working on a complex project, and when you wake up in the morning, your AI colleague has spent the night fixing code errors and even completing the testing perfectly. While “AI assistants” among developers have previously been at the level of suggesting code one line at a time, we are now moving into the era of “Agents” (AI that understands the user’s goals and performs tasks by judging for itself)—an AI that understands the big picture of a project and puts it into action itself. The new AI tool recently unveiled by Meta, ‘MuseCode,’ is the protagonist of this shift.
Why is this important?
Until now, the AI coding tools we used were more like “consultants” that answered when a user asked a question. However, the software developers handle is a giant mass of thousands or tens of thousands of files intertwined. If you fix one part, it often causes problems elsewhere. Meta’s MuseCode focuses on ‘autonomous execution ability’—actually writing code, testing it, and managing the overall project structure inside the terminal (the core command window of a computer)—going beyond simple Q&A. This means a new type of ‘AI colleague’ has arrived that helps developers focus on more complex and creative problem-solving.
Easy to understand: The smart factory manager
To use a very simple analogy, MuseCode is a ‘smart manager’ running a massive software factory.
- Automated design and execution: If the AI of the past was a kind senior who answered when you asked, “How should I write the code for this part?”, MuseCode is a competent manager that designs the blueprint, writes the code, and even checks if the code runs properly with a single command: “Implement this feature.”
- The magic of the division of labor: MuseCode’s greatest strength is the way it handles ‘long-duration tasks.’ Just as a factory manager sends several repair workers (sub-agents) to different areas to repair a huge machine, MuseCode breaks down complex tasks into multiple smaller units and executes them simultaneously in the background (where the user doesn’t see). By distributing tasks this way, it can solve much more complex problems on its own. Source: Meta* released MuseCode — its own competitor to Claude…
Thanks to this method, developers can break free from simple repetitive tasks and spend more time on core strategies that require human consideration.
Current status: AI enters the terminal
MuseCode is currently in beta testing. This tool can be simply installed and executed with a single command in the terminal environment that developers use daily, without needing to install separate, complex applications. It supports Mac and Linux environments and uses ‘MuseSpark 1.2,’ Meta’s coding-specialized model, as its engine. Source: MuseCode from Meta released in beta - TrashExpert
Various evaluations are emerging regarding its performance. According to Meta’s internal benchmarks, MuseCode scored 82.9% in the terminal-based coding evaluation (Terminal-Bench 2.1). Some independent tests have evaluated MuseCode as scoring up to 89.5%, raising expectations for its performance in actual development settings in the future. What will happen in the future?
| Meta expects MuseCode to be able to incorporate the development know-how honed in its massive code repository. [Source: Meta Launches Muse Code AI Agent to Challenge… | The Tech Buzz](https://www.techbuzz.ai/articles/meta-launches-muse-code-ai-agent-to-challenge-openai-anthropic) In the future, developers will manage the flow of an entire project by talking to their AI colleague through the terminal window, without having to open hundreds of files one by one. |
Users should watch to see how many more complex and long-term tasks the AI can complete ‘on its own,’ going beyond simply inputting code. Another key point to watch will be how it differentiates itself through more convenient features compared to powerful rival tools like Claude Code.
