Imagine this: You show an AI a complex assembly manual for a machine and ask, “Assemble this.” But the AI just stares blankly at the pictures and brings you the wrong parts. In reality, AI has been struggling significantly to read the flow of complex processes contained within images.
In recent software development, ‘Mermaid’ is frequently used to keep up with development speed (Ref 2, Ref 4). Why is this important?
When we delegate tasks to AI assistants in our daily lives, we often show them flowcharts or schedules. If the AI cannot properly understand these diagrams, it leads to a double-process where humans eventually have to explain them again in code. This undermines the very meaning of using AI.
Graph2agent helps AI look at diagrams and implement the correct code on its own. Beyond mere convenience, this enhances the ‘comprehension’ of AI models, creating an environment where we can confidently entrust them with more complex software design tasks. As a result, AI behaves smarter, and humans can engage in productive collaboration with less explanation required.
Understanding it easily
Mermaid is a JavaScript-based tool that allows developers to draw flowcharts or relationship diagrams by just typing text, much like Markdown (Ref 3, Ref 5). Think of it as a ‘map made of text.’
When humans see a map, they immediately understand, “Oh, I’m going from here to there.” However, AI models often perceive these diagrams as ‘image information’ and get lost. Graph2agent converts these diagrams back into a ‘deterministic text’ form that AI understands best. It’s like attaching a ‘detailed manual’ next to a map, meticulously describing the map for an AI that cannot see it (Ref 9).
In short, instead of needing to use its brain to interpret complex pictures, the AI is handed a correct answer sheet that it can read and execute immediately.
Current status
Many existing AI models already possessed the ability to write Mermaid diagrams (Ref 10). If a user asked them to “draw a process,” they did it very well. However, when asked to actually implement the software based on that diagram, they frequently failed (Ref 16).
Currently, Graph2agent is filling this gap in ‘reading ability.’ Test results show that errors across diagrams have been reduced by approximately 50.41% (Ref 9). In particular, for tools like sequence diagrams (which show the flow of a system), the error rate has decreased by up to 80%, which is a surprising achievement (Ref 1).
Although the amount of input text increases very slightly (an average of 8% increase), the ‘reasoning tokens’ (costs consumed during the model’s thinking process) that the AI needs to agonize over have actually decreased by nearly half, resulting in much higher overall work efficiency (Ref 1).
What will happen in the future?
In the future, separate translation processes when sharing more sophisticated system designs with AI will disappear. Currently, one must go through Graph2agent, but in the long term, AI models themselves are expected to evolve to read diagrams as perfectly as they read text.
Instead of saying to AI, “Look at this document and write the program,” we will be able to communicate more concisely, saying, “Look at this Mermaid diagram and write the program.” As AI becomes able to grasp our intentions more clearly, the barriers to creative and complex software development will lower further.
