OpenAI has joined the massive PORTS-Pike AI computing campus project in Ohio, becoming a key client for the gargantuan AI infrastructure scheduled to begin operations in 2028.
Imagine a future where the AI assistant we use every day solves much more complex problems in an instant and cracks scientific puzzles in just a few hours. To support such smart AI, progress in software alone is not enough. Just as a brilliant brain needs a constant supply of energy to work tirelessly, AI needs a physical space that acts like a massive “heart.”
Recently, OpenAI has stepped up as a key player in building this kind of colossal infrastructure. News has emerged that OpenAI has joined the PORTS-Pike project.
Why is this important?
AI models like the “ChatGPT” (conversational artificial intelligence) we are familiar with often feel like they operate magically somewhere on an invisible server. In reality, however, they require massive data centers—collections of servers that store and process data—to handle enormous volumes of computational data.
This project means that OpenAI has secured large-scale “learning space” needed to create even more powerful AI in the future. The PORTS-Pike technology campus to be built in Ohio will be more than just a data center; it is set to become a massive infrastructure where AI can learn to its heart’s content. This can be seen as the establishment of a solid foundation upon which the performance of AI services can be dramatically improved. Furthermore, this project is expected to inject great vitality into the local economy, such as by creating tens of thousands of jobs in Ohio and investing $80 million into the community. An easy analogy
To help you understand, let’s use an analogy. Imagine there is a gifted student solving very difficult math problems. For a student (AI) to study well, they need a quiet study room and plenty of reference books (data centers). If the student studies more and more and needs to increase their reference books from 100 to 1 million, the existing small room would not be able to handle it.
The PORTS-Pike project is like “the world’s largest library and research lab” prepared for this gifted student. OpenAI has decided to use a significant portion of this facility exclusively from the start, and has even secured the right to acquire more space as needed in the future. Source 12, Source 17
Current status
Currently, this massive campus is being advanced with the support of NVIDIA (the company that makes GPUs, the core of AI computation) and SB Energy, and is scheduled to begin phased operations starting in 2028. Source 12 OpenAI will initially use infrastructure with a capacity of 4.25 IT-GW (Information Technology Gigawatts, a massive unit of computing power for AI operations) and has secured the right to use an additional 3.75 IT-GW in the future. As the development of AI technology accelerates, infrastructure spending by leading companies like OpenAI is snowballing every year. As billions of dollars in spending are expected in 2026 alone, AI is a technology that requires massive capital and energy. Source 15
What happens next?
When this campus fully opens in 2028, we are highly likely to encounter AI that is much more evolved than what we have today. It is a time to look forward to what amazing artificial intelligence models OpenAI will unveil based on the massive server rooms in Ohio. In addition, considering the impact of AI technology on society, OpenAI is collaborating with partners in various fields and striving for the responsible development of technology.
