Anthropic's 'Claude Cowork' desktop app has added a built-in browser, allowing the AI to read and manipulate websites independently without user intervention.

Anthropic, the AI safety and research company, announced an update to its AI assistant Claude’s desktop app, “Claude Cowork,” which now includes a built-in web browser. Why is this important?

It is currently being distributed to subscribers of Anthropic’s paid plans—’Claude Pro’, ‘Max’, and ‘Team’—and is expected to gradually expand to more users over the coming week. What will happen in the future?
As Claude gains the ability to manipulate the web environment directly, AI will gradually move beyond the category of a simple “chatbot” and take on the appearance of a “Digital Agent” (an intelligent proxy that performs specific tasks on your behalf). It will act as a secretary that expertly handles the websites we use every day, taking care of complex work processes for us. Ref 5
In the future, users will weigh how accurately and safely an AI can navigate websites and complete tasks to get the desired results, rather than just whether the AI is good at writing text.
