Moving away from complex databases, storing AI memory as everyday document files—'Memory as Documentation'—is emerging as a new trend in agent development.
Imagine you are working with a very smart and reliable personal assistant. But what if this assistant kept all their work notes in an encrypted database that you could never see? It would be unsettling, and it would be difficult to check the details when you really need them.
In the world of AI agents (AI that performs tasks on a user’s behalf), we are seeing the exact opposite trend. It is the practice of storing AI memory as “document files,” rather than in complex databases.
Why It Matters
In the past, AI would hide its memory inside a massive “Excel sheet” (database) deep within the system. Users had no way of knowing what the AI remembered or how it thought. However, modern agents leave their memories as Markdown files (a lightweight document format commonly used on the web) within the user’s workspace.
This allows users to check, edit, and directly control the AI’s memory just like opening a notepad. This dramatically increases AI “transparency.” It is like being able to open a work diary written by your assistant to add or subtract content yourself. Transparent memory means user control over the AI.

To understand “Memory as Documentation,” let’s use an analogy of how we study in school:
- Database Approach: It is like hiding books in a library’s complex indexing system. Only the librarian (the AI) knows the location of the book, and we can barely check the content unless we ask the librarian.
- Memory as Documentation Approach: It is like having an “important notebook” on your desk. You can read the content yourself, stick on sticky notes, and erase incorrect information with an eraser. AI Agent Memory Management - DEV Community defines AI memory through this approach not as hidden system state, but as editable, transparent files.
This trend is so influential that Jerry Liu, a titan in agent development, has declared, “Files Are All You Need.” According to The New Stack - AI Agent Memory Architecture, Anthropic’s agent technology also adopts a method of packaging agent functions into a bundle of Markdown files, supporting this shift.
Where We Stand
We are currently in the early stages. Although the Agent File (.af) standard was announced in April 2025, each development tool still manages files differently. Some agents read CLAUDE.md files, while others follow different rule files.
As analyzed by tomrochette.com, there is currently the inconvenience of users having to manually create symlinks or write separate scripts to share memory between different AI agents. However, tools like ‘memU’ are trying to solve fragmented management by managing memory as wiki-style Markdown files, allowing multiple AI tools to share them. cmem.ai also proposes a way to share a single memory file between multiple agents and editors.
What’s Next
In the future, the “standardization of memory” will be the key challenge. If countless AI agents create and edit files all over your computer, who will manage and organize them? Agent Filesystem Research points out the need to consider who will clean up the intermediate reasoning logs or state files that agents constantly produce.
Soon, we will naturally handle memory files written by AI just as we manage the “config files” of the apps we use. The future is coming where records left by your AI assistant pile up in your computer folders, and you can edit them yourself to correct the AI’s personality or work style when necessary. Now, AI memory is moving from a cold database to your warm study.
