As autonomous AI agents become more prevalent, the open standard 'Agentic Trust Framework' is gaining attention for making these agents safe to control and reliable to use.
Imagine this: You wake up in the morning and ask the AI agent on your smartphone, “Please organize my morning meeting materials and share them with the team in advance.” Without hesitation, the AI opens your email app, summarizes the meeting content, and sends it out. This is incredibly convenient. But what if the AI accidentally sent confidential documents along with the meeting notes or uploaded the materials to an unauthorized external server?
As “Agentic AI” (autonomous AI that thinks and acts for itself) becomes more common, the anxiety hidden behind this convenience is growing. It is great that AI can handle tasks for us, but we are left in a situation where we don’t know who to trust with those tasks. The concept that has emerged to solve this problem is “Agentic Trust Controls.”
Why Is It Important?
The AI we have used until now was closer to a friendly assistant that provides answers when asked. However, AI is now evolving into an executor that uses tools, controls apps, and completes tasks on its own. According to IBM research, clear governance—a system of control over authority and scope of action—is essential for AI agents to perform real work[Source: IBM AI Agent Governance Playbook].
Without such controls, we would be unable to know where the AI is going or what it is doing. If users feel that AI is operating outside of their control, trust in the technology will inevitably plummet[Source: Malaysian Foodie]. For companies, there is also a desperate need for a system that can be structurally trusted to prevent security incidents and pass audits from regulatory agencies[Source: Cloud Security Alliance (CSA)].
Put Simply
The “Agentic Trust Framework (ATF)” can be described simply as “safety rules for AI”[Source: ATF Official Website].
As an analogy, think about hiring a new employee at a company. We don’t blindly give a new hire full authority. We run a background check, create a rulebook defining what work they can do, and have a manager (a senior employee) periodically check that they aren’t making mistakes. ATF performs this same process for AI agents.
- Identity Verification: Checks if the AI is qualified to perform the task.
- Compliance: Sets the scope of which tools the AI can use and what it can access.
- Monitoring: Watches in real-time to ensure the AI does not act outside the set boundaries.
This framework follows the “Zero Trust” principle. It is a strict security philosophy stating, “Do not trust anyone, even our own company’s AI; verify every action”[Source: MassiveScale AI GitHub]. To achieve this, 61 granular control items have been prepared across 12 domains[Source: LinkedIn].
How Far Have We Come?
Currently, Agentic Trust Controls are undergoing active standardization, led by the Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) community. Companies that follow this standard when adopting AI agents can pass security audits much more easily[Source: Security Senses].
Furthermore, a new field called “Agentic Trust Engineering” has emerged. This is research that goes beyond simply building good AI, focusing on designing tools and standards so that humans and AI can collaborate with mutual trust[Source: Coder Legion]. However, simply having a checklist is not enough. The challenge remains to constantly verify how well these controls function in real operational environments[Source: LinkedIn].
What Will Change in the Future?
Experts believe that future AI agents will need a “digital passport.” Once an “Agentic Trust Layer” is introduced, all agents will be required to carry an “Immutable Passport” that clearly states who they are, what data they use, and what actions they are permitted to perform[Source: Paragraph].
If an AI secretly does something unusual, an independent auditing system will track and record it in real-time. As we work more safely with smarter AI, technical defensive walls and standards of trust will become even more robust. Please remember that as daily life becomes more convenient, the corresponding safety measures are evolving alongside it.
