Stop repeating yourself to Claude! Chat and Cowork are now one

Imagine having to explain your name, your job, and what we need to do today to someone you meet every single time you see them. It’s like briefing a coworker every morning: “Hi, I’m [Name], and today we need to work on this project.” This is exactly the frustration we’ve faced when communicating with the AI Claude until now.

But that hassle is disappearing. Recently, Anthropic merged the memories of Claude’s conversational model, ‘Chat,’ and its work delegation tool, ‘Cowork.’ [Source 4, Source 16, Source 17, Source 21] Now, Claude gathers and remembers everything from the conversations you’ve had in Chat to the work context processed in Cowork. [Source 11, Source 16, Source 17]

Why does this matter?

One of the greatest sources of fatigue when using AI is the ‘interruption of context.’ For instance, when you brainstorm in chat, but then switch to the work tool Cowork to create actual deliverables, the AI often reverts to a blank slate, asking, “So, what exactly can I help you with?”

This update elevates AI from a simple Q&A window to an ‘assistant who knows me well.’ Imagine if the AI could remember project priorities, your preferred document style, and the work done up until last week. Users don’t need to send detailed instructions every time; saying, “Continue that project we talked about last week,” is enough. Understanding it easily: Claude with ‘Two Brains’

To use a metaphor for Claude’s change, it’s as if twin Claudes who lived in two separate rooms now share ‘one massive library.’

• Claude Chat: A ‘meeting room’ for sharing ideas, conversing, and setting direction. This is where we think about what to do and talk. [Source 1]
• Claude Cowork: A ‘workshop’ for opening files, handling tools, and creating actual results. [Source 1]

Previously, stories shared in the meeting room (Chat) weren’t automatically delivered to the workshop (Cowork). So, every time you moved to the workshop, you had to bring meeting minutes and read them again. Now, Claude has opened a connecting passage between the workshop and the meeting room. [Source 4, Source 17] Thanks to this, what is said in the meeting room is remembered in the workshop, and lessons learned in the workshop are reflected when returning to the meeting room. In short, it’s not that the AI saves a summary when the conversation ends, but that it updates notes in real-time as the conversation progresses, [Source 16, Source 21] providing an experience like working with a very high-recall coworker.

Current status: What works and what doesn’t?

Currently, anyone can use this shared memory feature immediately.

1. It works everywhere: As Chat and Cowork move into one unified home, your project context is maintained whether on web or desktop. [Source 4, Source 19]
2. It remembers automatically: Even without the user giving a separate command to summarize, necessary content from conversations is automatically saved to memory. [Source 16, Source 21]
3. Privacy control: Users can decide what the AI remembers. It is designed so that users can opt-out of saving sensitive data, especially regarding health, political views, and gender identity. [Source 4, Source 17, Source 21]

However, there are points to note. Not all Claude services currently share this memory. While Chat and Cowork have become one, Claude Code is not included in this shared memory scope. [Source 17] Additionally, Anthropic notes that this integrated environment is primarily optimized for and provided to desktop and web users. [Source 4, Source 19]

What comes next?

As Claude understands your daily life more deeply, the collaboration between AI and humans will become more natural. While it’s currently at the ‘memory sharing’ level, it’s highly likely to develop into a form where Claude identifies and suggests the document formats or work patterns you frequently use before you even ask.

Anthropic’s update is a significant milestone in AI moving beyond a simple tool to a true colleague. A world without sentences starting with “As I said last time…“—an environment where we can delegate more work to AI and focus on more creative tasks—has moved just a little bit closer.
