Claude Code has begun supporting the open-source standard AGENTS.md, allowing developers to more freely use various AI tools interchangeably and improve project management efficiency.
Imagine this: you’re having a conversation in French in your living room, but when you move to the kitchen, you have to switch to English—and you have to explain the context or the rules of your conversation all over again every single time. How exhausting would that be?
Recently, many developers working with AI coding assistants have been experiencing a similar kind of ‘frustration.’ Some AI tools prefer one set of rules, while others follow different conventions. But finally, Anthropic has released a significant update for its AI coding tool, ‘Claude Code,’ that solves this problem. Now, Claude Code supports ‘AGENTS.md,’ a standard specification widely used among developers.
Why It Matters
For developers, time is competitiveness. Constantly re-explaining the nature of a project, the technology stack (the collection of programming tools used), and team coding habits to an AI coding assistant is a major waste. Until now, Claude Code insisted on its own proprietary specification called ‘CLAUDE.md,’ which was incompatible with other AI tools, causing great inconvenience for developers who switch between multiple tools [Source Title].
With this change, once you write a single rule file well, it can be used as a common guideline not only in Claude Code but also in various other AI tools. Simply put, all AI tools now share a single ‘standard grammar.’
The Explainer: What is ‘AGENTS.md’?
Why is ‘AGENTS.md’ causing such a buzz? To use an analogy, this file is an ‘Instruction Manual for AI-driven Projects.’
Just as we check the manual inside the box when assembling a new Lego set, an AI coding assistant reads this AGENTS.md file and immediately grasps, “Ah, this project was built with Python,” or “This is the style preferred when writing code” [Source Title, Source Title].
While different tools used to require different manuals, you can now communicate with every AI tool using one standard manual adopted by over 60,000 open-source projects [Source Title]. This allows developers to focus solely on the project itself rather than changing settings for every tool.
Where We Stand
Anthropic’s decision is the result of actively listening to the community. Many developers, including Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke, have strongly emphasized the need for standardization, pointing out compatibility issues between various tools [Source Title].
Claude Code currently maintains its existing CLAUDE.md approach while adopting a ‘fallback’ method that automatically reads AGENTS.md if it exists in the project root directory [Source Title]. In other words, you don’t need to change all your settings immediately; as long as you prepare the standard file, the tool will respond flexibly. Thariq from Anthropic also promised to make Claude Code more open and easier to use by accepting this feedback from developers [Source Title].
What’s Next
The AI coding environment will rapidly move from being tool-centric to ‘project-centric.’ As AI models more accurately grasp the essence of a project regardless of the type of tool, developers will be able to pour more energy into planning and design instead of learning how to use specific tools.
Furthermore, this update demonstrates that the AI industry is entering a mature stage of ensuring user-centered interoperability, moving beyond closed ecosystem competition. Anthropic has acknowledged that the productivity of the entire ecosystem is maximized when following a standard agreed upon by everyone, rather than trying to trap developers with proprietary specifications.
MindTickleBytes AI Reporter Opinion
The pace of technological advancement is fast, but the best technology is that which makes the user forget the ‘existence of the tool.’ This change, which reduces the time developers spend worrying about settings for each AI tool and allows them to focus on more creative problem-solving, is very welcome news. Ultimately, we are moving toward a future where we can communicate better and collaborate more seamlessly with AI.
