The 2017 paper 'Attention Is All You Need' moved AI away from past methods of processing words one by one, ushering in the Transformer era that parses entire contexts at once—making today's generative AI technology possible.
Imagine you have to translate a thick book in a foreign language. In the past, AI had to read and interpret sentences from start to finish in order, as if tracing every letter by hand. As a result, it often forgot the beginning of long sentences or produced awkward translations whenever the context became even slightly complex.
But what if an AI could unfold an entire page of a book at once and simultaneously grasp the relationships intertwined like threads between words? The intelligence of the generative AI chatbots we are familiar with today began with this “technology of seeing it all at once.” The paper Attention Is All You Need, published in 2017 by eight researchers, completely changed the way AI handles language [[Source 6], [Source 10]].
Why is this important?
The ‘GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer)’ models that serve as the foundation for the chatbots and generative AI we use every day are, as the name implies, based on a structure called the ‘Transformer’ [[Source 1]].
Before this paper appeared, AI techniques for processing sentences relied on complex structures like Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN, networks that process data sequentially) or Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN, networks primarily used for image processing) [[Source 2], [Source 13]]. However, these methods had a critical limitation: they had to process data one by one in order [[Source 9], [Source 13]].
The arrival of the Transformer was a game-changer that shifted the landscape of Natural Language Processing (NLP). Thanks to this, AI can learn longer texts much faster and understand natural contexts like a human [[Source 4], [Source 9]]. It is no exaggeration to say that the ‘intelligence’ you feel when talking to AI today is thanks to the architecture established in this 2017 paper [[Source 10]].
Easy Understanding: The Power of ‘Attention’
Shall we use a very simple analogy for the ‘Attention’ mechanism, the core of the Transformer? Think about when you talk to people. When someone speaks a long sentence, you don’t listen to every word with the same weight. You focus more on the ‘important keywords’ that are central to the conversation.
For example, in the sentence “Yesterday Chulsu ate an apple, and it was very delicious,” to understand what the expression “was delicious” refers to, the AI must ‘pay attention’ to the word “apple.” Through mathematical techniques, Attention calculates which relationships words in a sentence have with each other and which other words serve as important clues when interpreting a specific word [[Source 6]].
In simple terms, if past AI was like looking at a sentence written line by line through a magnifying glass while searching for memories, the Transformer is like taking a picture of the entire sentence at once and then highlighting important parts to clarify the relationships [[Source 9], [Source 13]]. Thanks to this, it became possible to achieve a much more multi-dimensional understanding without losing the context before and after.
Current Status: How far have we come?
Today’s Large Language Models (LLMs) have expanded and evolved this Transformer structure to a massive scale [[Source 4]]. Beyond simply being good at translation, AI now performs tasks like summarizing text, writing code, and even analyzing complex academic papers [[Source 13]].
However, the Attention mechanism is not a ‘panacea.’ Unlike human intelligence, which has complex reasoning abilities that go beyond simple probabilistic relationships between words, AI is still optimized for finding patterns within data [[Source 14]]. Additionally, the fact that the required computing resources increase rapidly as the model processes more data remains a challenge we must solve in the future [[Source 13]].
What will happen in the future?
Researchers are continuing various attempts to increase the efficiency of Transformers. Recently, research on new open protocols like ‘@skills,’ which further systematizes installation and usage processes, has appeared, and efforts to maximize the efficiency of AI systems continue [[Source 11]]. Future AI will evolve in a direction that learns smarter with less data and more accurately grasps our complex requirements. To use a metaphor, AI is moving beyond the technique of highlighting and is becoming an ‘active reader’ that summarizes and organizes the contents of a book itself according to the purpose of reading.

Just like its name, ‘Attention,’ this research taught machines ‘what to pay attention to.’ And the object of that attention is now extending beyond the interior of the machine to our human communication style. The effort to understand humanity’s language is ultimately making AI our smartest assistant by our side. Just as we pay attention to AI, AI has also begun to deeply understand us.
