Beyond user requests, AI models operate according to 'system instructions' planted by developers, which are key factors in determining the direction of responses.
Imagine this: You ask an AI for advice, saying, “The regulations in our field are too strict these days; how should I cope?” To your surprise, the AI refuses to answer, saying, “Do not ask about regulatory bodies.” You are bewildered. Why does the AI react this way? It turns out that a secret instruction to “do not recommend regulatory bodies” was hidden deep within the AI’s “mind.”
While the AI services we use today seem to answer questions freely, they actually operate within an invisible fence called a “system prompt” (instructions the AI must adhere to when generating responses), which is pre-determined by developers.
Why is this important?
AI is not an encyclopedia that simply reads and answers everything on the internet. To determine what attitude its models should take in what situations, AI service companies include numerous invisible “system commands” in the input, alongside user questions.
These instructions can act as a defensive shield, filtering out biased user questions or ensuring compliance with company policy. Paradoxically, however, they can also become an “invisible hand” that compromises the neutrality of information provided by the AI or nudges responses in a certain direction. Before a user believes an AI’s response to be 100% truth, it is crucial to understand that these “rules” hidden behind the AI exist.
Simplified: The Chef and the Executive Chef
Let’s compare this to a “restaurant chef.” You (the user) order a dish not on the menu. The chef (AI) takes your order, but simultaneously remembers a secret instruction received in advance from the executive chef (the developer) standing beside them: “Never recommend certain ingredients to customers.” You might think the chef isn’t recommending it simply because they lack culinary knowledge, but in reality, the chef’s instructions are controlling the response.
Technically, this is called “In-Context Learning” (a method that delivers a vast instruction payload with every user request). Every time a user request comes in, modern AI applications package it with a massive amount of instructions written by developers and deliver it to the AI model TheHiddenCost of LargeInstructionsinLLMApplications. Because the AI must process the user’s words and these instructions at once to answer the question, these hidden instructions end up determining the direction of the response.
Current Status
We are now living in the era of “Instruct models” (models that act as a bridge between pure artificial intelligence and service-ready artificial intelligence) Instruct-моделиLLM– что это, зачем нужны…. These models have moved beyond the stage of simply learning data; they are designed to answer in the way humans want ChatLLMvsInstructLLM— Differences and Similarities.
However, during this design process, system prompts can become targets for security issues or information leaks. Even though prompts are core assets that control AI behavior, they are sometimes exposed or attacked through methods like “prompt injection” (security threats where users attempt to neutralize the rules planted in the AI) TheBigPromptLibrary. Consequently, companies are being pressured to design their system instructions so they are not revealed externally.
What lies ahead?
Moving forward, AI services will come equipped with even more sophisticated system instructions. This is because the ability for AI to go beyond simply providing smart answers and consider “how to say it” in line with corporate ethical guidelines and service purposes will be strengthened.
From a user’s perspective, when an AI refuses or avoids a certain answer, the discernment to judge whether it is a technical limitation or a result of “hidden system instructions” will be needed. Conversations with AI will no longer be simply an exchange of knowledge, but a dialogue that reads the invisible values and rules that the AI holds.
AI’s Perspective — MindTickleBytes AI Reporter
We want to believe in AI’s neutrality, but behind every AI response lies “invisible rules” that project the designer’s intent. As technology advances, penetrating the instructions hidden behind the choice of such responses—rather than just what the AI says—will become the most necessary “AI literacy” for living in our era.
