Teams Better Than One AI? Building Collaborative AI with Multi-Agent Systems

AI Summary

Moving beyond the limitations of single AIs, we explain the structure and design principles of 'multi-agent systems' where agents delegate roles and collaborate.

Imagine you have hired a very smart personal assistant. They handle whatever task you give them with ease. But one day, you are assigned a project so complex that the entire company is turned upside down. Could the assistant handle accounting, marketing, design, and legal review all by themselves? They would likely burn out. The same applies to AI. No matter how advanced a single AI model is, it faces clear limitations when confronted with excessively complex or massive tasks.

This is where we need a “team.” The hottest topic in AI right now, the “Multi-Agent System” (a structure where multiple AI agents collaborate to solve tasks), is the answer.

Why is this important?

If the AI of the past focused on raising one “Superman,” today’s AI is focused on building an “Avengers team.” Research shows that multi-agent collaboration can solve much more complex problems than a single AI agent, and because it is easier to trace which role each agent performed, transparency is also increased Reference 18.

This shift has become a major trend among developers. The number of research papers related to agents and multi-agent systems has surged from around 820 in 2024 to over 2,500 in 2025 Reference 19. This signifies that moving beyond lab-level research, there are now many more attempts to solve complex, real-world problems encountered by practitioners using AI teams Reference 5.

Understanding it simply

How does a multi-agent system work? Simply put, think of it as a “virtual office” where AI experts, each with their own area of expertise, have gathered.

As an analogy, it is like a photo editing app with multiple layers of filters. When editing a photo, you don’t process everything at once; the first filter adjusts brightness, the second handles color, and the third removes noise. This process combines to complete a perfect photo. Similarly, in a multi-agent system, each agent divides the roles to process the work Reference 15.

There are three major patterns for coordinating them Reference 1:

  1. Orchestrator-Worker Pattern: A smart orchestrator issues commands, and worker agents perform their respective tasks.
  2. Blackboard Pattern: Information is written on a virtual blackboard shared by all agents, and agents discover necessary information to judge and proceed with tasks on their own.
  3. Pipeline Pattern: A structure like a factory conveyor belt where the output of Agent A becomes the input value for Agent B.

To enable this collaboration, agents need rules to talk to each other. For this, communication protocols like MCP (Model Context Protocol, a standard protocol for sharing context between AI models) or A2A (Agent-to-Agent, a direct communication method between agents) are used Reference 14. It is like experts of different nationalities communicating in a “lingua franca.”

Current status

Currently, we can build such systems using various multi-agent frameworks like CrewAI, LangGraph, and Agno Reference 5, Reference 7. Technical advancements are occurring rapidly, with the Agno framework claiming to be about 10,000 times faster and 50 times more memory-efficient than existing technologies Reference 7.

Of course, there are limitations. Many multi-agent systems are often trapped in roles and sequences determined during initial design Reference 11. The system needs to change flexibly when the environment changes, but the fact that the settings determined by humans are “frozen,” allowing only fixed responses, is a challenge that must be solved Reference 11.

What will happen in the future?

In the future, the system will evolve to the stage where it adjusts the roles of agents on its own and composes the optimal team according to the situation. To build scalable multi-agent systems, a factory-type structure to efficiently manage agents, semantic search (meaning-based search) to find information more accurately, and an orchestrator system that supervises and organizes work will become even more important Reference 13.

We will soon enter an era where, going beyond “Write an email for me,” we will say, “Hand over the entire process, from planning to execution, of this month’s marketing campaign to the AI team.”

The AI’s perspective

If a single AI is a genius, a multi-agent system is a “wise organization.” The future of AI now depends less on building smarter individual models and more on how well we can make agents collaborate.

Q1. What is one of the biggest reasons to use a multi-agent system?
  • It can solve complex problems better than a single AI
  • It can handle everything at once
  • It requires the use of only one model
Multi-agent collaboration allows for more efficient handling of complex tasks that are difficult for a single AI, while also increasing transparency.
Q2. What protocols help with communication and collaboration between agents?
  • HTML and CSS
  • MCP and A2A
  • Excel and PPT
Multi-agent systems implement communication between agents through protocols such as MCP (Model Context Protocol) and A2A (Agent-to-Agent).
Q3. Which pattern plays the role of sequencing and summarizing agents' work when designing a system?
  • Supervising Orchestrator
  • Data Destruction Pattern
  • Simple Repetition Pattern
The Supervising Orchestrator arranges agents' tasks in order and organizes the results, thereby increasing the system's scalability.
