[Nietzsche] Do Not Be Conquered by the Desire for Possession

The desire for possession is not inherently bad. It encourages us to work and earn money. With that money, a person can enjoy a life of abundance and even attain human freedom and self-reliance. However, when this desire exceeds its bounds, it begins to treat a person like a slave. Days are consumed using all one's time and ability just to acquire more money. The desire for possession even steals away one's rest and binds the person completely. Precious things to a human—such as inner richness, spiritual happiness, and noble ideals—are completely ignored. In the end, one descends into a person who is materially abundant but spiritually very impoverished. Therefore, we must always remain vigilant to see if the desire for possession is attempting to dominate us.

- Excerpt from "The Words of Nietzsche" -

' The desire for possession,' which carries the dictionary definition of 'the desire to make something one's own and possess it,' is necessary, but it must not be excessive. Whether it is material or spiritual, when the desire for possession becomes excessive, the results are bad. The deeper the desire for possession of money, the more impossible it becomes to escape from within it. The deeper the desire for possession of another person, the more love degenerates into obsession. It is important to keep a proper balance in everything.

It is not that the desire for possession is bad. It is important to maintain that line. Let us not forget 'why' we wanted to possess it in the first place.
