ChatGPT has begun sophisticated targeted advertising based on user conversation context and uploaded email/phone number information.
Imagine this: This morning, you asked ChatGPT, “I’m planning to move, and I’m worried about which water purifier to buy.” In the past, water purifier companies simply poured their advertising budgets into the keyword “water purifier.” But now, things have changed. ChatGPT understands the “context” (the background of the conversation)—that you aren’t just searching for a water purifier, but are actually worried about it within the specific situation of “moving.” Thanks to this, the AI can now present you with an ad containing exactly the right information.
Recently, OpenAI has begun introducing advertising into ChatGPT in earnest, creating a new flow in the digital advertising market (Source 3). Let’s easily and clearly dig into what this new AI advertising system, which has entered deep into our daily lives, is, and how our data is being used.
Why is this important?
The advertisements we have commonly seen until now were keyword-focused. For example, if you typed the keyword “sneakers” into the internet, ads for sneaker stores would pop up one after another. However, ChatGPT advertising takes a completely different approach.
The core of this advertising is “user conversation context” (Source 4). This is because the ad appears right in the middle of the “decision-making process” where the user is agonizing over what product to buy. From a company’s perspective, they have gained an opportunity beyond simply exposing an ad; they can understand the customer’s concerns and offer solutions. For the user, the landscape of marketing is changing significantly in that it may not be indiscriminate advertising, but useful information approaching at the exact time it is truly needed.
Easy to understand
Shall we use an analogy to make it easy to understand how ChatGPT advertising works?
If existing advertising was the “neighborhood bully” method of blasting a loudspeaker in an alley shouting, “Listen up, everyone!”, ChatGPT advertising is like a “quick-witted personal assistant” who knows the user’s inner thoughts well.
- Identifying Intent in Conversations: ChatGPT reads your entire conversation and figures out what you need. For example, if there is a conversation like, “I’m trying to buy my child’s first bicycle, please recommend a safe model,” the AI clearly understands the intent that the user is interested in “bicycle purchase” and “safety” (Source 4).
- Customized Filtering: On top of this, advertisers can utilize the “customer lists (emails or phone numbers)” they already possess (Source 12). For example, if a certain bicycle company uploads contact data of customers who have signed up on their website to the OpenAI platform, that brand can precisely expose ads only when their existing or potential customers are chatting with ChatGPT about bicycles.
Like this, the AI finds ads in real-time that fit the user’s context amidst over hundreds of thousands of diverse conversation results (Source 11).
Current status
OpenAI has already finished its technical preparations. It has been revealed that advertising interfaces such as “search ads” or “search ads carousel” are already being tested internally in the Android beta version (Source 18).
Currently, these ads are not designed in a way where the advertiser who suggests the highest amount simply gets priority; they are designed so that exposure is based on how much “valuable information” the brand provides to the user’s research process (Source 4). However, there are also concerns being raised from some corners regarding trust issues felt by users as ads are mixed into AI conversations, or attempts by advertisers to induce AI answers in a direction favorable to themselves (Source 17).
What will happen in the future?
It is predicted that even more diverse advertising formats, such as generative ads utilizing visual images beyond simple text-type ads, will appear (Source 6). Although it is in the early stages, if this advertising system is applied to the 1.2 billion weekly users of ChatGPT, the way we chat with AI will itself change.
Readers may one day find themselves thinking, “Is this AI listening to me to show me ads?” when chatting with AI in the future. While technology provides convenience, the fact that personal conversation context becomes data and is used for targeting is a part we must clearly recognize.
MindTickleBytes’ AI Reporter Perspective
Whether advertising provided by AI will become a “value” that solves my worries beyond simple information exposure, or an “intruder” that steals into the context of my conversations, now depends on the users’ evaluation. Technology is already by our side, and it is the time to decide how to accept that change.
