We often think of history as something distant and unrelated to ourselves. Or we view it as old books neatly arranged on dusty library shelves. However, history clearly exists for each and every one of us. It is the history of our daily lives. How we act and what we do in this very day, the present—that is what decorates a page in our daily history. Can you finish today without fear or panic? Will you spend it idly, or will you challenge yourself bravely? Will you think of a better way than yesterday to accomplish something? Each and every attitude like that builds your own daily history.
- Excerpt from "The Sayings of Nietzsche" -
The word 'history' reminds me of a friend. I wondered what they meant, but now I think I understand. I never wanted to be remembered as history. I don't wish to be recalled that way. I just want to live happily with the people by my side at this very moment. If spending time idly or challenging myself bravely are all parts of that, I will not avoid them. To me, the longing to keep being with the people I hold dear right now is greater than the desire to be 'remembered.' 'Memory' is a word too sad for me. Someday, that friend will know too...
Are Nietzsche and I thinking differently today...?
Do not live to become history.
